Alex Reid is a name some of you may have spotted in Malcolm in the Middle credits as he is the executive producer/writer and eventually showrunner on the final season. He won an Emmy for the writing of ‘Bowling‘ in 2001. He also produced ‘Help Me Help You‘ which starred Jane Kaczmarek (Lois).

Emmy-winning writer-producer Alex Reid has inked a two-year overall deal with ABC Studios.

Under the seven-figure pact, “Malcolm in the Middle” alum Reid will join the studio’s upcoming ABC comedy series “Samantha Who?” as co-executive producer and will develop new projects.

Reid read several scripts this past development season, but the single-camera “Samantha,” written by Don Todd and based on an idea by Cecelia Ahern and Todd, stood out.

“It was a very emotionally written story,” he said of the project, previously known as “Sam I Am” and “Samantha Be Good.” “I feel that this is the direction television comedy needs to go to attract and hook audiences.”

He also was drawn by the prospect of again working with Todd, whom he met on NBC’s short-lived animated comedy “God, the Devil and Bob.”

“Samantha,” which stars Christina Applegate as a woman with amnesia who has to rediscover her life, landed the plum post-“Dancing With the Stars” slot on ABC’s fall schedule.

Reid first met with ABC Studios president Mark Pedowitz, executive vp Julia Franz and their team two years ago when his deal with “Malcolm” producer Regency TV was up.

He said he was impressed by Pedowitz but ultimately “wasn’t ready to leave ‘Malcolm.’ ”

Reid inked another two-year deal with Regency TV and served as executive producer and eventually showrunner on the final season of “Malcolm.” Last season, he served as executive producer/co-showrunner alongside creators Alexandra Rushfield and Jennifer Konner on Regency TV’s praised but short-lived comedy for ABC “Help Me Help You.”

When his deal was up this year, “it was a new playing field with no show for me to return to,” he said. “I remembered how much I liked Mark and his team, and ABC Studios was the first place I went back to when I was looking where to land for the next few years,” he said.

Reid won an Emmy in 2001 for writing the “Bowling” episode of “Malcolm.” The episode also earned him a WGA nomination.

Reid is repped by the Rothman Brecher Agency and attorney Jared Levine.
