Interesting question Dr_Nyman and not one I have an answer to. All I can do is speculate that since Dewey is a kid, he is not aware of what exactly a surgical mask is used for and only assumed that by wearing one, it may prevent him from obtaining any diseases he felt could be come from a leg.

I like that idea! There is often gratification associated with the wearing of medical clothes. Research has been implemented to prove that this can provide a wearer with a heightened sense of mood and reality. Perhaps even tension.
