Video file conversion help

Hi - I used a little digital camera and recorded an AVI file which is a gigantic 500MB.

Can anyone point me to software or a site to convert the AVI file into something smaller?

What's the idea file format to post a video on Youtube?

Thx all in advance

H264 .mov/.mp4 files are the best for YouTube.

I recommend HandBrake for conversion.

If you mean this source: http://handbrake.fr/details.php, it says it only outputs to MP4 and MKV formats.

I use a combination of 4 tools, whichever works, so it's not a real quick-fix solution (to say the least):

  • Windows Movie Maker for creation (output to WMV)
  • conversion with QuickTime Pro (MOV/MPG/MP4 to MOV/AVI/MP4/MPG)
  • conversion with DivX Converter (MPG/AVI/MP4/WMV/XVID/VOB etc. to DivX-format AVI)
  • conversion to Flash-format with Riva FLV Encoder (from AVI/MOV/WMV/MPG)
  • because Riva breaks down for larger files, I'm now reviewing SUPER (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html)

SUPER looks like, well, a super tool!

Try it out! Its installation and start-up are a little quirky, but it appears to convert back and forth between lots of formats, like AVI, FLV (Flash), MPG, MOV, MP4, MKV, WMV, but also audio formats like MP3, WAV, WMA and FLAC (lossless!). It can also rip DVDs.

It's freeware too!

Rich, now they only use two containers (mp4 + mkv) but back then they had several.

HandBrake can be very useful but I don't know how to add a preset that I want for rips that I want to do. Help?

You can customize about everything you want, but the best is AviSynth, however it has no interface (it's like programming and to do it, it's used notepad, if I'm remember correctly), you gotta be a pro or almost to work with AS.

Thanks for the tips, MITM_Fan.

I don't have HandBrake at the moment, and I will look into AviSynth you mentioned. So far, SUPER has been working fine, with lots of features you can tweak.

I can do a bit of programming, but I'm not too keen on writing scripts or command line stuff right now, though it's nice to have some script ready that works as a sort of default solution for standard-quality vids.

With interfaces, I always make notes of the settings that work best, which can be tedious and can easily get lost.
