Justin Berfield's new show Sons of Tucson has unfortunately not been popular enough and it has been confirmed by FOX (via Variety) that the show will be removed from its current time slot. Effectively, the show has been cancelled.

Thankfully, the remaining episodes will air in the summer, in a process known as 'burning off' (where the network just seeks to fill less popular time slots). From June 6, the remaining 9 episodes will air on Sundays at 7:30pm.

This is a big disappointment for the show as well for those who worked on it and means almost certainly that there won't be a second season.

It's no consolation, but perhaps fans should be glad that the show got this far -- it sounds obvious, but getting a TV show on US national television is very hard. The fact that Sons of Tucson got this far genuinely is an achievement. While the viewing numbers weren't enough for FOX to want to keep it in its slot, let us not forget that several million people did enjoy watching it.

We look forward to seeing the rest of the episodes in the summer and wish Justin luck in his future projects!

This a such sad news, I admit it isn't a hysterical show, but I was really enjoying it. Really feeling for Justin & Todd, also this means we have to wait for Justin's on-screen appearance!

The Middle's ratings may be average, but they double the ratings for Sons of Tucson. I mean, a drop of almost 1.5 million viewers by the fourth episode? Ouch.

Haven't watched SoT but The Middle is very entertaining and a great show. Tbh, hasn't got much to do with MitM apart from the name and other small things.

Um, okay? I never questioned the quality of the Middle. Or said it was a copy of Malcolm.

MITM vs THE MIDDLE vs SONS OF TUCSON

There are some ties between MITM and THE MIDDLE. I think we were discussing SONS OF TUCSON like the direct heir to MITM because of Todd Holland and Justin producing, but THE MIDDLE has a lot of links too:

1. Betty White is going to be guesting on THE MIDDLE. She was in MITM as Ida's rival Canadian 2nd wife.

2. Alex Reid wrote/produced for MITM and is now a writer for THE MIDDLE.

3. Michael Weaver, cinematographer, worked on both shows

4. Jamie Babbitt, directed episodes of both MITM and MIDDLE.

I was just saying nothing more.

Series have similarities, like songs, and movies and games. FPS/TPS/Racing/Fighting/Adventure game genres copied something, like on series and songs.

"GTA vs Driver vs Just Cause" is a great example, I would take Driver out of the list immediately and just keep GTA vs Just Cause, because both are pretty good and hard to decide when it comes to it.

Or clones.

End of story.

timeslot

They should have had the show at a 8:00 or 8:30 pm timeslot- then it would probably have more viewers. 9:30 seems a little too late for some people.

hard to know why a show gets cancelled. MITM fans seemed to have given it a lukewarm reception. Maybe Justin and co will ask us to testscreen future comedies in the future? :)

It's such a shame. I didn't really find the show all that funny, but the plot of each episodes were semi amusing. At least we get to see Justin in the last episode. I mean, we haven't seen him on TV for about 3 or 4 years since MITM ended.

Apparently, Sons of Tucson is not cancelled, but 'on hiatus'

http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/sons-of-tucson-not-cancelled-14100/

April 11, 2010

Last week, FOX made the decision to pull their new Sunday night sitcom, Sons of Tucson, after just four airings. Several sites have reported that the show has been cancelled but in truth, it’s on hiatus.

(...)

When it debuted last month, the ratings for Sons of Tucson weren’t good and pretty much got worse every week. That’s not a surprise to those behind the show since they believe it was airing in the wrong timeslot.

A spokesman for the show said, “FOX bought Sons of Tucson in the hope of resurrecting the genre for the network and hoped to eventually build out a live action comedy block night. They looked to Justin Berfield and the [Malcolm in the Middle] creative team to do just this.”

“They bought the show to put on at 8:30pm and despite initial audience testing results reporting against it, the network top brass decided to put Sons of Tucson on much later at 9:30pm, which draws a much different, less family audience. How does a family show do during a non-family hour? Well… not good.”

With such disappointing ratings, it’s no surprise that the network has pulled it from the schedule. Labine has signed on to another sitcom for CBS but Sons of Tucson is in first position. If FOX decides to renew it, he’ll be obligated to return to Tucson.

The series is scheduled to return on June 6th at 7:30pm. Unfortunately, that’s not a great timeslot either but it’s at least a little more appropriate for the show. If the series is to be renewed, it has an uphill battle — especially since most outlets are reporting that it’s already been cancelled and it won’t return from hiatus until after FOX has already announced its 2010-11 schedule.

Berfield isn’t ready to give up the series and insists that the series just needs time to grow and even offered to donate half his producer fee to charity if the show is renewed for season two.

Though the show hasn’t been officially cancelled, it looks like Sons of Tucson is going to need some serious charity (and ratings) to get renewed.

Wow - talk about a last minute reprieve! Hope he and the rest can save it. i think he has to push Internet marketing to get word-of-mouth. And who knows if they are going to go back to re-edit the remaining episodes or not. Talk about a nail-biter!
