Jane Kaczmarek has joined the new ABC pilot, "Who Gets the Parents?", a half hour multicamera comedy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show "revolves around a couple (Kaczmarek, Adam Arkin), who, after 30 years of marriage, are getting a divorce and take on more active roles in the lives of their three adult children."

Joining Kaczmarek and Arkin are actors Andrew West ("Greek") and Derek Richardson (TV's "Men In Trees" and the film "Hostel") who play the couple's youngest and middle child, respectively.

Jane's character is named Phyllis Fiddleman and she's described as "outgoing, boundaryless, the biggest critic and biggest defender of her kids."

This sounds like great news! A class act like Jane deserves a new challenge after 'Raising the Bar', or at least steady employment on some show. Although we are prone to think of multi-camera shows with audiences as lame, because of MITM and more modern shows, I think she would work great in the format, as she would have been great in a Seinfeld-, Golden Girls- or All in the Family-type comedy with good writing and strong female characters.

This Adam Arkin reminded me of something by the way. Of course I'm tempted to think of his dad Alan Arkin, but didn't Jane and he act as a couple some time ago? :D

Jane Kaczmarek (Lois) Back to Comedy

I hope that this show is able to make it past the pilot stage and become another successful vehicle for Jane to showcase her great comedic talent. She deserves to have a successful show after her two failed attempts with Help Me Help You and Raising the Bar.

The pilot of "Who Gets the Parents" was taped on April 14th at CBS Radford Studios (where MITM was taped, incidentally) and I'm hearing it went great. Inside word was the studio was impressed however, the doesn't necessarily mean a series pick-up is forthcoming. ABC will have to wait till all of their ordered pilots are available for review and then evaluate their needs for the 2010-2011 schedule.

With the success of ABC's new comedy Wednesday lineup with "Modern Family", "The Middle", and "Cougartown", ABC definitely wants to capitalize on that success by finding another couple of comedies to fit in that block. Could "Who Gets the Parents" be one of them? We'll find out in May at the upfronts when all the networks unveil their fall schedules.

The other two main roles were cast with Lindsay Broad (FOX's "Til Death") playing only daughter Cass and Lindsay Price (ABC's "Eastwick" and NBC's "Lipstick Jungle") playing Neil's wife, Brenda.

Here's a more in-depth synopsis of the show:

When most couples get divorced, the big question is who gets custody of the kids. When a couple with three adult children gets divorced, the question is who gets stuck with the parents?

After 30 years of marriage, Gene and Phyllis Fiddleman have decided to call it quits. There was just something missing. Fiery Phyllis didn't exactly choose this, but now that she has the freedom and excitement of being single, she's embracing it. All her anti-social husband Gene wants is someone to help him operate the dishwasher. Their three adult children are startled by the divorce.

Well, most of them, at least. Their 26-year old totally co-dependent youngest son Mitch has to confess that he suspected something. After all, he still lives at home. Their momma's boy 28-year old middle son Neil is happily married to Brenda, but secretly wishes he still lived at home. Meanwhile, their well-adjusted, independent 30-year old daughter Cass is quite happy to live as far from her parents as she can get. So imagine how she feels when mom moves into the apartment next door. Everyone wants his or her family to be close, but there's got to be a limit, right??
