Why did Hal's family hate Lois?

Her personality, her being 'beneath them' and she 'stole' Hal from them (although, this one was suggested by Hal more as an assurance/comfort/joke than anything).

I think it comes down to the fact that Hal's family consider themself in a superior social class to that of Lois, so Hal 'married down' when he married Lois. Lois, in their eyes, brings the value of their family down.

Hal came from a wealthy family - see episode when they go to his father's birthday party (Christopher Lloyd) while Lois' parents were Canadian working class living up in the Yukon.

Hal's family nickname for her... "Lois Common Denominator."

That said, they also implied that Hal and Lois met in high school or college, so at some point, Lois' family must have moved to the US.
