Hi! I`m am 13 and I`m from Bulgaria. I so much like Malcolm In the Middle I watch it all the time... I even made my grandma watching it lol. Unfortunately the same way as Malcolm i was in the krelboyne class. On top of that I started school one year earlier than I should just because I could read when I was 4 and I was badass at Maths :D:D. Anyway I`m 8th grade and I have great friends. Me and one of my friends are absolutely the same way as Malcolm and Reese. I`m smart and always have good grades but I`m the biggest prankster ever in my town. Mom and Dad have been in school around 14 times and I`m totally grounded :(:D. Still I`m very active user (talking `about reading posts :D). I`m very good at basketball, volleyball and acting. They tell me that if I go to acting school I will be awesome but..... I don`t know. Everyone tells me that I should be in some show like Malcolm In the Middle. One time I was so angry at my teacher that I secretly put eggs in my class room. It was vacation so when we came back the smell was..... But I was enjoying it and I was secretly laughing. The suspected me but they didn`t had any evidence so I got away scott free :D. Anyway I suck about girls... I mean I somehow can`t, I`m too shy. Excuse my english I`m 8 grade and I`ve never been in english speaking country so..... Doesn`t matter Greetings from me!

Welcome, zsstefanov!

Great to see new fans from all over the world come to this site, and by the way: your English is fine and you've written a great, detailed introduction. Very few people actually do that!

It's funny though that now we're gonna get fans that are just as old or a bit older than the series itself! I guess that's proof of the comedy's staying power. Its not like, well, we've seen that, it's old and let's move on to other programs ... That's what's so great about 'Malcolm'!

You know what I actually think the same way as you do. When MITM ended I was worring about that people will forget about it after few years. Hopefully for now it isn`t this way. In my country there are so many fans of MITM. Ok check this out, I made a research. In my country there are about 7 million people. When the first episode started there was 250 000 viewers. At the final episode there was 750 000 viewers. In the research I also saw that, the more the episodes are going on, the more people was watching the show. Now they are running it again which is actually great for me :) . I so much like how big the ratings are. God bless Malcolm in the Middle.

Wow, 750,000 viewers is such a large number! Here in Holland (I'm Dutch) we have 16 million people, but MITM was only watched by 200,000 viewers at most, and that was last year (3 years after the final episode had aired) so it's never been extremely popular around here. I've never really seen Dutch fans online until last year.

I don't know what you think of it, but I remember (I'm a bit older than you ;)) that 'The Wonder Years' and other comedies (Perfect Strangers, Cheers) were big hits in Bulgaria and other Slavic countries after the end of Communist rule, because people weren't used to seeing them before, and watching them made people feel free and happy, because America had that kind of attraction to them: freedom, wealth, happiness, fun!

In Holland, we have been watching American sitcoms (situation comedies) and other series for ages, and they're on TV so often, we hardly notice new ones or get really fanatic about them!

Well I haven`t been born in the Communist times but I get what you mean. I think the key in the big rating in Bulgaria is that people just watch some short part from some episode and then they say I should watch it again.

At your age you think that non-original dubs are good but when you start to notice how much they suck, you don't wanna hear them.

Really, dubs sucks, original audio is always better.

Well, actually most of the times really dub isn`t better than the original. Of course in our dub Malcolm loses a bit his charm but still it`s very nice dub. I`ll just say that the original Malcolm is much better than the dub and I know this.

Edit: When I said that most of the times dub really isn`t better I meant all the shows.

Dubbers are dubbing and don't necessarily count in for emotions.

People that do dubs for porn movies it's good dubs but can't beat the original.

Note: I don't watch pr0n but I know.

Dubbing serves a purpose, especially for young children who can't read yet, and some countries are quite good at it, better than others. I sometimes hate those fat ugly subtitle letters that disfigure a beautifully photographed scene, and there have been times that I forgot a movie was dubbed in German or French because I got perfectly used to it, and it didn't affect my viewing pleasure.

Sometimes studios have complimented other countries on their dubs, or actors have said that other voice actors capture their performance quite well.

But of course I always prefer the original version, but sometimes it isn't available or workable, and I make do with a dub.

Here in the Netherlands (Holland) I've always watched Malcolm with its original sound, or with subtitles, because dubbed versions of it don't exist.

Also, I would find dubbing really weird, because the series is aimed at somewhat older teens, and they are supposed to be able to read subtitles, and also because so many of the situations and jokes in the series, not to mention all the signs, letters, billboards etc. are obviously American, so there's always some sort of clash, or at least incongruity to me.

I think it's different for cartoons like Spongebob or Dora, because they are for young children, and take place in some kind of fantasy world.

But in other countries like France and Germany, the dubbed version is pretty much the standard, because they have a tradition of dubbing all movies and TV series anyway, even for adults. I sometimes watch Malcolm in French or German on DVD, because I know the scripts, so it's a nice way to practice language skills!

There's been a strange trend though in the Netherlands, in the sense that the Disney and Nickelodeon TV channels started dubbing their teen series like iCarly and Victorious more than 10 years ago. I don't like this development, because the dubbing is generally awkward, and it's a good thing for children from about 10 to be exposed to English.

I think the first time I noticed this on public (non-commercial) TV was for the Australian series Lockie Leonard, even in the second season when the leading character was 15, but that was 10 years ago and really I no longer watch teen shows. So I guess if they had started programming Malcolm now, they would do a Dutch dub.

I don't really know why this is, but I think it has to do with broadening their appeal to preteens, who are more likely now to watch these shows than, say, 15 years ago. Also because there is more sensitivity to disabilities like dyslexia, and reading skills have dropped dramatically over the last 10 years - cause or effect? More and more teens nowadays never read a book or a newspaper, so it could be hard to keep up with subtitles. Still, I wish they would reverse the trend.

Best,

Rich

French dubbing for Malcolm

A case in point: in France, Malcolm in the Middle, called simply Malcolm over there, was very likely most popular in all of Europe, so they invited Frankie Muniz over in 2017.

Here Frankie is confronted with his French dialogue and voice actor Brice Ournac, because most French fans know only the dubbed version:

As Frankie rightly states, "You must do a very good job, because everyone is a big fan of the show, and they didn't get to hear me, they hear you."

By the way, since the episode he quotes from, Health Insurance (7x02), is called Assurance tous risques in French (i.e. "Insurance all risks"), this reminds me why the amateurish bard in the Asterix comic book series is called Assurancetourix!

But this joke will be lost on most readers abroad, because his name is translated as either Cacofonix or Malacoustix in English-speaking countries ...

Best,

Rich
