"Malcolm in the Middle" went through its awkward stage early. It was an instant hit for Fox when it premiered in January 2000. However, its 14-year-old star, Frankie Muniz, who was 13 when he shot the first season as an 11-year-old whiz kid, had grown eight inches and his voice had dropped at least an octave before the show came back for a second season that fall. So producers scrambled for an early shoot over the summer, and juggled new story lines for their lead character.
"We realized that a lot of the fourth grade, fifth grade, 10-11-year old stories we had been planning to do with Malcolm we couldn't do anymore," said creator Linwood Boomer. "We had to sort of write to his age."

Watch 116 Water Park followed by 201 Traffic Jam. According to the cliffhanger story these episodes are actually the same day. In 116 Justin Berfield is clearly at least 4 maybe 6 inches taller then Frankie. In 201 they are nearly identical in height and Frankie's voice crackles most of the episode.

BTW that morphing pic is disturbing

for some reason, I prefer the earlier episodes... They should have shot season 2 right after season 1 if they realised Frankie was at that maturing stage...

ps: that morphing picture is indeed disturbing... :D

Wonder what story ideas they had? But even if they couldn't be used for Malcolm, the writers could still have used them for Dewey in Seasons 6 and 7, adapting them as necessary.

Maybe they did and we didn't know. But either way, Malcolm and Dewey are really different so a storyline written for Malcolm might not fit Dewey even when he was the correct age.

Exactly what I was thinking reading this. I wish they'd've disclosed 'em to us. Actually... it's possible that these ideas were filtered into different projects. Just a thought... Mainly I'm just curious. And I agree with the others about the picture.
