I don't know why Im making this game up. Im just bored and this will give us something to do!:D Plus I think we could use another game.

Anyway, the game is simple. Im gonna put a math problem here(annoying algebra type math:D ) and see who can answer it. Whoever answers it gets to make up the next problem. Simple, eh?

Here it goes!

2(x+2)=?

And that's the ANNOYING MATH PROBLEM!:D

Here's a much harder one. Tell me the vertex of the graph of the following equation: y = -5x^2 + 20x -3 (note: that's 5 x squared)

@yardgames: May the vertex be (-2/-63)? I didn't try too hard, so probably it's wrong...

and @J.: For your solution x=-2 the equation would have to be 2(x+2)=0, but Mike's one was only 2(x+2)=?, so I would have stopped calculating with 2x+4.

Does that make any sense or am I talking total crap?

It was asked to do both, as in both finding the variable, and solving it, unless I misinterpreted it...

I haven't done maths for years now, but I always thought you needed simultaneous equations to calculate 2 independant variables. Currently that equation is possible with an infinite amount of numbers because ? will always be equal to 2x + 4. Therefore you can't have a wrong answer.

@Dabney: No, that's not correct. Sorry.

If it helps, you don't actually have to graph it. It's much more precise to solve the equation. Which of course you can't do because you have an x squared and an x, which aren't like terms and cannot be combined. So you need to convert the equation to something usable. I recommend using a perfect square trinomial.

y = -5x^2 + 20x -3

Basic quadradic equation: y = ax^2 + bx + c

Formula for the axis of symmetry: x = -b / 2a

Solving for x:

x = -20 / 2(-5)

x = -20 / -10

x = 2

Solving for y:

y = -5 (2)^2 + 20 (2) -3

-5 (4) + 40 -3

-20 + 40 - 3

y =17

Vertex = (2, 17)

Damn, I should have asked you when I was trying to figure out how the hell to do this stuff-that's a lot easier than the way my teacher taught me. :D Of coures, after he taught us, he gave us a calcuator program that does it automatically--it's great, just type in the numbers and it finds x-intercept, y-intercept, vertex, and a bunch of other crap for you.

Yeah, I was wondering why you suggested taking the perfect square trinomial. I guess you could do it that way, but it seems like it would be a lot harder and more and more involved. I hate it when they make you do all that work then tell you that you could just plug it into the calculator. They just do it to torture us. :D

I'll let someone else post the next one cause I got rid of my algebra book and I can't think of anything off the top of my head.

- 5x = - 5x

25 = 25 + 7x

Okay, here's one with a MITM twist. You may need to find a formula somewhere to figure this one out. ;)

Dewey was mad at Malcolm and Reese for not letting him watch his favorite TV show. He decided to get back at them by destroying their comic book collections. Afterwards, he started thinking of what they were going to do to him so he got scared and ran from the house at a rate of 0.08 miles per minute. Wondering what was going on, Malcolm and Reese went to their bedroom and saw their comics shredded all over the floor. Furious, they began to run after him at a rate of 0.12 miles per minute. Dewey had a two minute head start. How long will it take for Malcolm and Reese to catch up to Dewey so they can beat the snot out of him?

*Just FYI: 0.08 miles per minute is approximately 5 mph and 0.12 miles per minute is approximately 7 mph. I went ahead and converted them to miles per minute, rather than miles per hour to save you the trouble. :D

Actually, I didn't use any formula at all!:D I got a sheet of paper and used the given numbers and put them into fractions, such as Dewey was 1/4 a mile ahead and Reese/Malcolm trailed him at 2/4 miles. Thus, I figured it'd take about 4 minutes for them to catch Dewey. Im amazed I got it!:D Anyway, I guess it's my turn. If you don't mind, Im going to use a word problem too, to give mine a MITM twist!(not trying to steal your idea:D ).

Hal and Lois bought a brand new car. Before going to work, Lois tells Hal not to drive the car. Later in the day, Hal gets in the car. He drives 10 minutes from the house. Hal then realizes Lois gets off early and turns around to speed home at 65 MPH. Lois is driving home at 50 MPH and is only 5 minutes away. Hal must get to the house with the car before Lois. How fast must he go to get home before Lois?

Weird... I've actually learned about d=rt. I wouldn't have gotten a word-- excuse me, number-- of this thread (after the first problem) a few months ago. Guess I'm learning something in school. :P

d=rt is an extremely handy formula. I frequently use it during long car trips to approximate how much longer the trip will take me.

I'm guessing you don't like Maths...

As tony_montana said, the answer is 4 minutes ;)

Although I didn't see the answer until after I did it myself. I missed page 3 for some reason and only saw Lucky Maroon's post on page 4.

My working:

time= distance/speed

For Dewey:

t+2=x/0.08

(where t= time to catch up and x= distance they ran)

0.08t+0.16=x

For Malcolm and Reese:

t=x/0.12

0.12t=x

So:

0.12t=0.08t+0.16

0.04t=0.16

t=0.16/0.04=4 minutes :D

(Which means incidentally they ran 0.12*4=0.48 miles

which is around 772.5 metres)
