Malcolm in the Middle is a show filled with mysteries, and I like to play the game of solving it.

When the show starts Dewey is 7 years old, according to

http://malcolminthemiddle.wikia.com/wiki/Dewey_Wilkerson

That makes him born in 1993 (2000-1993=7)

In season 4 episode 21 (aired on May 11 2003), a great performance by Eric Per Sullivan, indicated that his birthday is this Thursday, but what month??

According to the timeline set my our dear Retired Administrator yardgames
in this thread http://www.malcolminthemiddle.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=6

That month is September 2003.

But Jamie's birthday is hard for me, because my grammar sucks, his birthday in the timeline is the same day in their universe, Baby part 1 and Baby Part 2 are the same. And Hal says "It is just six days sooner and our lives are over" when he tries to tell the kid that they will induce labor on Thursday, so what day is that??

I think the age and holiday matters can never be fully worked out, because the writers took some liberties with them. I assume this started out with the long time it took for the Pilot episode to get the thumbs-up from various companies, which meant the follow-up episodes could only be filmed after a few months.

By that time Frankie was going on for 14, and when he had his growth spurt and his voice broke at the end of Season 1, the writers had to make some radical adjustments.

They didn't just accomodate for that, however, they realized it gave them free rein to mess around with plots and jokes, and not to be too fastidious about it.

It's the same with the issues of the family's location (and perhaps surname), religion and ethnicity. The actual location had to do with practical considerations (close to Hollywood facilities), and race and religion most likely with avoiding certain sensibilities, as in most TV sitcoms, but in the end it offered the writers more freedom to explore the full potential of crazy situations and plot twists.

You just reminded me right now, about the family ethncity. I wasn't researching it, I was researching about Hal's job and such and encountered IMDB
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0212671/faq
It is very interesting, Grandma lives in Manitoba which has high Ukrainian concentration and the toast they used a Romanian word "Noroc" and her real father had a Romanian first name!!!!!!! RADU

Lois could be Romanian in some way!
