[aimage=left]boomer_linwood.gif[/aimage]"Malcolm In The Middle" creator/exec producer Linwood Boomer is stepping down as show runner after six seasons at the helmhelm of the Fox laffer.

He's expected to be replaced by veteran scribe Matthew Carlson, ("The Wonder Years"), who's been on staff at "Malcolm" for the past three years.

Until now, Boomer has been a rarity in the TV biz: A series creator who stays in charge of his project for most of its lifespan. As a result, Boomer's decision to leave now, as "Malcolm" enters what will likely be its final season, comes as something of a surprise -- though not a complete shock, given the grueling demands of a single-camera comedy.

But it's believed that Boomer -- who won a comedy writing Emmy for the "Malcolm" pilot -- was ready to move on after spending so many years at the helm of the Regency TV-produced show. He also has an overall deal at Regency, and he'll now have time to focus on developing other projects.

Boomer isn't leaving the Regency TV-produced "Malcolm" completely, however. While giving up his exec producer/showrunner credit, Boomer will remain as a consultant and direct some episodes of the skeinskein.

In addition to writing for "Wonder Years," Carlson created the comedies "God, the Devil and Bob," "Men Behaving Badly" and "Townies."
