New Threads in News and Announcements: Cracking Down on Spam

As some of you may know, anyone can start a new thread in the News and Announcements part of the board. However, a moderator must approve it before it appears and becomes active. It's lucky we have that in place because in the last week alone there have been several instances of spam almost every day, of course by a whole slew of different and new members that are subsequently placed on probation. Nonetheless, I am absolutely sick of it. Therefore, I am announcing that no members may create a new thread in News and Announcements until further notice. If you have a news article, please post it elsewhere and a moderator will move it to the News and Announcements board. I apologize for the inconvenience and will attempt to determine if the culprits are one or two IP addresses that can be easily banned. Until then, we will all need to put up with this new restriction. Plesae let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

I have a question: How about replying to existing threads in News and Announcements? As that isn't possible at the moment, what would you like us to do if we have more to add to an existing thread in that section?

Go ahead and add it. I've futzed around more and found the error--sorry about that.

My apologies for this problem; I plan to re-enable the forum as usual soon; I think I have banned the culprit but want to monitor new user registrations for a few days to make sure.

I appreciate your continued patience in this problem. At this time, the restriction is going to continue, due to continued foul-language user sign-ups. I hope to lift the restriction by the weekend.

Yeah about that foul language user sign up...didn't someone sign up yesterday that was named "something Viagra"?:D
Lol, some people out there.:D

That's the one I was concerned about when I considered lifting the restriction this morning. I'd appreciate a PM from you guys if you see stuff like that--it's completley inappropriate. :)

Ok, I got a question: If we don't mind, do you mind?
What I mean by that is if we see an "inappropriate" name, but we just don't really care, do you still want it brought to your attention?
Anyways, guess you decide, your the boss.:)

If you want to ignore it, Tony, be my guess. I'm not going to ban you or anything. :D But if anyone does care to be helpful... :)

It seems that the problem has been resolved now anyway. There haven't been any inappropriate user names for a few days and no one has tried to post spam in over a week. I think it was likely one indiviudal registering with multiple user names, then when they found out they couldn't post their spam here, they went away.

That's great news! If I do see a username of concern in the future, I'll be sure to let you guys know. :)

Actually, I just checked yesterday. I believe it is a single person but there are still inappropriate user names being created. I delete them immediately, hence the reason Christina doesn't see them.

I'm slightly wary about this but we'll see how it goes. :D I've reopened the News and Announcements board as normal. Remember, new threads will still need to be approved before they appear but you may now once again directly request and post new threads in that forum. Thanks for your cooperation. :)

Well, it seems theres still some people desperate to post spam in the News and Announcements board, so I was racking my brain trying to think of a way to stop the spam but still allow people like Rye to post articles for us. So what I came up with is that junior members may not create new threads in News and Announcements. You can still post to existing threads, but you must have at least 100 posts to create a new one. I think that seems like a better solution to this problem. :)
